Logging into the POTSDAM Domain AND Accessing Helios From Resnet

General Network Setup
STEP 1 - Configuring the Network
If you already have networking installed, please skip to the Logon Procedure.
In order to set Networking up, you have to get to the Network Control Panel:
Start Menu --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Network
Once you are here, you will see a windows like this:
If you see nothing here you will have to add a device, and set it up. If you do have something in this window, you may already have networking (and, if you do, skip to this step: Logon Procedure)
In order to set up networking, you need to set up your Ethernet Adapter.
Add --> Adapter
Click on the "Adapter" choice and proceed to select your device.
Here is a sample using a 3Com EtherLink III as the Ethernet Card:
Once this is set up, you will have to add the Protocols in order for it to work on the network.
Add --> Protocol
This shows how to add the TCP/IP Network Protocol:
After you have all these things installed, your "Network" window should look very similar to this:
In the "Network" window, click on the "Identification" Tab, and set up your Computer Name, and Workgroup.
You may experience less problems if you set your "Workgroup" to "Potsdam". This may allow you to access Helios easier.
If you cannot get networking to work, contact the Helpdesk or an RCC.
STEP 2: Logging on to your machine & the POTSDAM Domain
In order to access Helios you can either do one of two things:
- Set your Workgroup to be "Potsdam" and reboot. (This may not *always* work) -or-
- Set your computer up to log into the Potsdam Domain
The next few steps will show you how to set yourself up on the Potsdam domain, if you feel you want to just set your computer up in the "Potsdam" Workgroup, You may safely skip the next screenshot and don't worry about the "Domain" in the Logon screen.
In order to set yourself up on the Potsdam Domain, you should first take a look at THIS DOCUMENT on how to make sure you do not end up with a machine that is using the default "policies." A quick overview of what you should check is below:
Run Regedit.exe (Start Menu --> Run --> regedit.exe), and follow these steps: 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update
- Change the key 'UpdateMode' to be equal to '0'. (To do this, just double click on the key, and when it opens up, change the '1' to '0')
- Delete the key 'NetworkPath'. This is the key that tells Update where to look for the policies, and will only cause problems if it is left there.
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
- Change the key 'MustBeValidated' from '1' to '0' (This will allow students/faculty to log into their computer even if it is OFF the network.... will cause problems if left there)
Now you are ready to set yourself up on the Potsdam Domain.
Open up the "Network" control panel again:
(Start Menu --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Network)
Now double click on "Client for Microsoft Networks" and check the "Log on to Windows NT domain" box. Now, you can type in "Potsdam" in the 'Windows NT Domain' text box.
After you have done this, click "OK" and then reboot your computer.
Once your computer reboots you should see a Logon window like this:
Type in your username, and your password (the same one you use for Lab Machines and Email):
Now you should be logged into your computer and you are ready to connect to Helios!
*NOTE* if your computer starts to 'look' like a lab machine, or do strange things, refer to THIS DOCUMENT. If this does not help, try to contact an RCC or the Helpdesk.
Finding and Accessing Helios
STEP 3: Accessing Helios
In order to find Helios you can do one of many things.
One of the first things to try is to just browse to it in "Network Neighborhood"
Double click the "Network Neighborhood" icon on your desktop. Click on "Entire Network" and then find the "Potsdam" Workgroup.
Once you are in the Potsdam Workgroup, you can see Helios. (If you do not, try the next option)
Double Click on Helios.
Another way to find Helios is by using the "Find Computer" utility. You can access this by going through:
Start --> Find --> Computer
Or by right clicking "Network Neighborhood"
Either way, you can type in "Helios" and find it. This is what it should look like:
If you are still having difficulties, you can try to use the "Run" command.
Start --> Run
Then type in "\\Helios" (without the quotes) just like in this screenshot.
Once you have accessed Helios, you can see your home directory (in this case "thern18"), Class Submissions (ClassSub), Class Files (ClassFiles), and the Temp folder. You have no access to the Faculty folder (unless you are faculty, of course). If you still cannot access Helios, contact the Helpdesk or an RCC.
Troubleshooting
You may run into the case where your machine looks like a lab computer, or you cannot access things normally. If you run into this, your computer may have Policies set up on it. To fix this problem, refer to this page: Fixing a Policied Computer , specifically THIS SECTION.
